Who Do You Want To Be?

Dec 15, 2020

The Real question is not what you want to “DO” it is who do you want to “BE”? That is where we need to focus and do the work! When we ponder about our life’s purpose, it is interesting to explore. Is it about doing? Are we focused on what we want to DO for others? What do we want to accomplish? What about asking the question, how do I want to BE? When you get clear on what that is, how you want to feel, that is the start of the journey to mindful inner growth.

I remember working with a leadership facilitator who was more than half way through facilitating a team offsite. I walked up to him during a break, full of energy and insight on what we needed to DO as a team. I remember him pausing, looking at me, then calmly saying, yes, AND, how do you want to BE? At the time, I was so perplexed. I was like… what!? What do you mean, how do I want to BE? I don’t even understand. We DO. Check, check, check. We move, we take action, we DO. He repeated again, yes, AND, how do you want to BE? How do you want to show up as a leader or leadership team? I didn’t even fully comprehend how to translate that into a behavior. I thought on that for awhile. I’ll never forget it. My journey of self awareness and mindfulness has helped to really crystalize who I want to BE. It holds the power of what really matters and where I want to focus my energy.

Pay attention to your BE/DO ratio. Before launching into what you want to DO, all the things you want to fix, solve, check off the list. First, think about how you want to show up in alignment with who you want to BE.
